Our Heroes
Cpl George A Morasch
Born in Calgary, Alberta, on May 24, 1923, George Morasch answered the call to serve Canada at the age of 19. His journey took him from his hometown to the battlefields of Europe during the Second World War.
As a Bren gunner with D Company of The Calgary Highlanders, George trained in England before serving in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. His service formed part of Canada’s contribution to the liberation of occupied Europe and the Allied victory.
George retired from military service with the rank of Corporal in February 1946. His contributions have been recognized through numerous honours, including the French Legion of Honour and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal.
In May 2025, George returned to the Netherlands as a member of the Government of Canada delegation commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands and the end of the Second World War. His return connected generations in remembrance and gratitude, honouring both those who came home and those who remained behind.
We honour Corporal George Morasch for his courage, service, and enduring connection to Calgary. Through his story, we remember the sacrifices made for the freedoms we cherish today.
Lest we forget.
