Our Heroes
George H. Reid
George Harvey Reid was born on June 4, 1943, in Surrey County, United Kingdom, to Canadian soldier Lloyd Reid and his war bride, Rose Roker. After the war, the family reunited in Cold Lake, Alberta, where George grew up.
At just 17, George answered the call to service by joining the Canadian Army. Trained as a tracked vehicle mechanic, he served with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and completed two United Nations peacekeeping tours — one in Egypt and another in Cyprus.
George married Candace Miller, and together they began their life as a military family. Posted to Germany, they welcomed two daughters: Crystal, born in Baden in 1969, and Heather, born in Lahr in 1971.
Shortly after Heather’s birth, George was diagnosed with lymphoma, prompting the family’s return to Calgary, Alberta. He passed away in February 1972 and is laid to rest with honour in the Field of Honour at Queen’s Park Cemetery in Calgary.
