Our Heroes

Hugh Kenneth “Ken” Sanborn was born on December 19, 1923, in Hanna, Alberta, the fourth of five children. He spent his youth in Edmonton, where he followed in the footsteps of his older brother Jack and answered the call to serve his country during the Second World War.

Ken enlisted in the Naval Forces of Canada at HMCS Nonsuch in Edmonton on March 1, 1943. He served aboard the River-class destroyer HMCS Orkney, contributing to Canada’s naval efforts during the war. After faithfully serving his country, Ken was honourably discharged on October 11, 1945.

Following the war, Ken married Joan, and together they raised their two children, Grant and Lorna. The family first made their home in Calgary before later settling in Westbank, British Columbia.

Ken passed away on March 27, 2012. A loving father and devoted grandfather, he was especially proud of his grandson Noel, who resides in Calgary.

Ken’s life was one of service, family, and devotion. His contribution to Canada during the Second World War and the life he built afterward remain part of a legacy that will be remembered with gratitude, respect, and honour.
