Our Heroes

James Blain was born in Scotland in 1920 and later immigrated to Canada, settling first in Drumheller and then Calgary. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1939 and served aboard HMCS Naden, HMCS Sackville and HMCS Drumheller as a lead telegraph operator.

A gifted artist, James created the original artwork painted on HMCS Drumheller’s gun shield during the war. This important piece of Canadian naval history is now preserved at The Military Museums in Calgary.

While serving in the Navy, James met the love of his life, his “beautiful doll,” Esther. They married in 1945 and built a wonderful life together. Following his military service, James worked in various occupations and volunteered with the Calgary Stampede.

James loved the outdoors, golfing, tying flies and tending his cherished rose bushes. A talented handyman, he could turn his hand to almost anything. Above all, he treasured time with his grandchildren, entertaining them by playing the harmonica and whistling.

James passed away on February 9, 2007. He is remembered with love and pride for his service, creativity and devotion to his family.
