Our Heroes

James Lickers

Captain James Robert Stanley “Bob” Lickers, CD served more than 20 years in the Canadian Forces before retiring from active duty in 1977. Born in 1940 on the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford, Ontario, Bob began his military career in the late 1950s. Over the course of his distinguished service, he served with the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, and the Canadian Airborne Regiment (3 Mechanized Commando). He later held the position of Captain of the Calgary Highlanders Cadet Corps.

Bob’s military career took him across Canada and overseas to Cyprus and Germany, reflecting his dedication and versatility as a soldier. After retiring from active service, he moved to Alberta, where he served as Chief of Police on the Stoney Nakoda Reserve west of Calgary, as well as in other important roles within the community.

Respected for both his leadership and his commitment to reconnecting with his Indigenous roots, Bob was to be honoured by the Stoney Band with the title White Eagle, a prestigious and meaningful recognition. Sadly, he passed away in February 1991 before the ceremony could take place, and the honour was awarded to him posthumously.
