Our Heroes

James Alexander Nichol Wright was born around 1923 in Rossland, British Columbia, to Scottish immigrant parents Isabella Nichol Wright and James Alexander Wright.

James initially trained as a pilot and hoped to serve with the Royal Canadian Air Force. However, recurring sinus infections prevented him from continuing in that role. Still determined to serve his country, he joined the Canadian Army and was sent overseas during the Second World War.

James was killed in Normandy, France, on June 9, 1944—just three days after the D-Day landings. He was approximately 21 years old. He is buried at the Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery in Normandy, where he rests alongside many other Canadians who gave their lives during the campaign to liberate Europe.

Although his life was tragically cut short, James’s determination, courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Through this memorial, we honour his service and preserve his story for future generations.
