Wayne Howard Arnold

Wayne H. Arnold
October 5, 1920 – October 13, 2004
The Canadian Scottish Regiment | Second World War

Born in Empress, Alberta, Wayne H. Arnold enlisted in the Canadian Army at Depot No. 13 in Calgary on December 15, 1942. In August 1943, he was sent overseas to England. His family recalls that the ship carrying him narrowly escaped being torpedoed—a reminder of the dangers servicemen faced even before reaching the battlefield.

Wayne served with The Canadian Scottish Regiment, attached to No. 2 Anti-Tank Gun Platoon. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, he landed at Juno Beach as part of the Allied invasion of Normandy. His regiment served alongside The Royal Winnipeg Rifles and The Regina Rifle Regiment in the 7th Canadian Infantry Brigade, 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. From the beaches of Normandy, Wayne and his platoon fought their way through to the western border of the Netherlands.

Wayne survived the war and returned home. He married Bertha Van Wyck, and together they had six children. His life after military service included a lasting connection to the Royal Canadian Legion and the fellowship of fellow veterans.

He joined Richmond Branch No. 276 when it opened in 1973. When that branch closed its doors in November 1994, Wayne became a member of North Calgary Branch No. 264, now known as Kensington Legion. His family also shared a connection to Branch 264, including his daughter Anne.

Wayne passed away on October 13, 2004. His memorial banner honours his wartime service and preserves his story for future generations. He is lovingly remembered by his children and family, with his late daughter Erna included in this tribute to their father.

Lest We Forget.
